RCEP Chambers Annual Lo Hei Dinner

For the past few years, MAYCHAM had taken the lead in organising a “Lo Hei” gathering to celebrate the arrival of the Spring Festival of the year with the support of all the participating chambers, making it a significant and successful event that members looked forward to every year. However, due to the unfortunate COVID-19 pandemic, this has been disrupted for 2 years.

MAYCHAM was delighted to be announcing the resumption of this event in 2023!

For the uninitiated, “Lo Hei”, in Cantonese literally translates to “tossing up good fortune”, and it refers to the ritual adopted in Southeast Asia that involves a group of people gathered around a massive plate, tossing its contents while saying out auspicious phrases before eating it—it is popularly believed that the higher the toss, the better your prospects and fortune in the year ahead!

This year, in view of the 10th anniversary of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) Agreement in 2022, MAYCHAM was thrilled to co-host this with chambers from the RCEP countries, namely:

Australian Chamber
Indonesian Chamber
Korean Chamber
Myanmar Chamber
Singapore Chamber
Hong Kong - Thailand Business Council
Vietnam Chamber

This year’s Lo Hei Dinner was proudly sponsored by InvestHK and we are pleased to had Dr Bernard Chan, Under Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development to be our guest-of-honour and speaker.

The Honourable Paul MP Chan, GBM, GBS, MH, JP, Financial Secretary of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, delivered his 2023-2024 Budget Speech to the Legislative Council on 22 February 2023.

Every year, the Hong Kong business community hosted a luncheon for hundreds of executives to hear the Financial Secretary elaborate on the details of his latest Budget.

Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 situation, we were not able to accommodate all guests to attend in-person this year. However, we deeply honoured that the Financial Secretary had accepted our invitation to speak to the Hong Kong business community online on 16 March. Attendees were able to hear Mr Chan discuss the Government's plans to steer its fiscal policy and enhance Hong Kong's competitiveness. Not least, he also discussed measures to help Hong Kong businesses rebuild and recovered as the pandemic recedes and Hong Kong reopens to the world.
