Business of IP Asia Forum 2019

Jointly organised by the HKSAR Government, Hong Kong Trade Development Council and Hong Kong Design Centre, BIP Asia Forum brings IP professionals and business leaders from all over the world to discuss the latest developments in the IP world, and to explore business collaboration opportunities. The eighth edition of the Forum was held on 6-7 December 2018 with great success, featuring over 80 prominent speakers sharing their insights and attracted more than 2,600 IP professionals and industry leaders to attend. Joint Business Community Luncheon with CE of HKSAR

HKSAR Chief Executive, the Honourable Mrs Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, delivered her Policy Address to the Legislative Council in October 2019. We were deeply honoured that Mrs Carrie Lam had accepted our invitation to speak to the Hong Kong business community at this joint luncheon which was held on Thursday, 31 October 2019. At this luncheon, the business community would be able to hear Mrs Lam discuss the reasoning behind the priorities in her Policy Address, and learn more about her initiatives to tackle key issues, such as housing, land supply, labour market, the environment and her plans for improving Hong Kong??s competitiveness in the year ahead.

About 25 members attended the Council's Annual General Meeting. The Council played its part in keeping members informed about the changing political and economic situation in the Kingdom and the affects of global events on Hong Kong and the Mainland. We also continued to develop ties with other organizations. Mr Tom Chatjaval, Mr Willy Lin, Mr Kenneth Gaw and Mr Raphael Tong were re-elected as Directors for the ensuing year. Simultaneously, Ernst & Young was re-appointed the Council's Honorary Auditors. The current Board of Directors consists of 11 directors:

Dr. h.c. Harald Link:

Harald Link is the third-generation Chairman and CEO of Bangkok-based B. Grimm Group ?V founded in 1878 as the Siam Dispensary. The B. Grimm Group is one of Thailand??s most prominent multinational conglomerates, with interests in healthcare, energy, building and industrial equipment systems, real estate, e-commerce and transport. Among his other corporate positions, he is Chairman of Amata B. Grimm Power Ltd., Amata Power (Bien Hoa) Ltd., B. Grimm Power Public Co. Ltd., and Carrier (Thailand) Ltd.

He was born in Switzerland, raised in Germany and gained an MBA from the University of St Gallen, Switzerland. He moved to Thailand to join the family business in the late 1970s. He has since taken Thai citizenship, and is highly respected in the Kingdom not only as a businessman, but for his educational and other philanthropic work.

Nasi Lemak Dinner Talk

Organised by The Malaysian Chamber of Commerce (HK and Macau), the Nasi Lemak Dinner Talk held on Monday, 27 May 2019 in Ballroom, 2/F., New World Millennium Hong Kong Hotel, 72 Mody Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong. Professor Chin Leng Lim was the speaker of the dinner talk.

Dinner talk topic: The time when Malaysia caught the attention of the international money lawyers, and other stories

This event followed a talk in London on 2nd May at the British Institute of International and Comparative Law about Chinese projects abroad - three pipeline projects estimated to be worth between 2.3 to 2.75 billion U.S. dollars, and a rail communications project previously worth 200 billion U.S. dollars. It was a story about the risks which accompany billions along the New Silk Road and a retelling of history's lessons during the Age of American Empire from the Panama Canal to Saudi Arabian Oil.

Design District Hong Kong (#ddHK) - #ddStory a Curated Guided Tour of Local Craft and Design

Hong Kong Design Centre (HKDC) and Tourism Commission (TC) were proudly to present Design District Hong Kong, a Creative Tourism Project launched it was preview earlier in December. We were cordially invited to a curated guided tour, #ddStory, to experience #ddHK and the intangible heritage of Wan Chai District, details are shown as follows:

Description : #ddStory highlights the intangible design and crafts in Wan Chai. In this tour, participants could get to hear first-hand from second generation traditional barber of Oi Kwan, his craftsmanship and the journey of keeping the legacy. Participants could also get to learn about Foo Tak Building, an arts & cultural oasis in the middle of the city. And of course, nothing beat pit stops with traditional pastries and drinks. This trail started at Fleming Road Garden of Wan Chai.

The Asian Financial Forum

The Asian Financial Forum (AFF) took place on 14 and 15 January 2019 in Hong Kong. The AFF bought together the global financial and business communities each year to examine the trends and development in the dynamic markets of Asia and beyond. More than 3,000 leaders in government, finance and business from 46 countries and regions took part at the last Forum to gather intelligence, establish connections, and explored business and investment opportunities.

The theme for AFF 2019 was "Creating a Sustainable and Inclusive Future" and some new initiatives as below:

1. Creating a Sustainable and Inclusive Future Under this major theme, it had four key panels on Day 1, namely Global Investment in the New Economy, Startups and Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Technology, as well as the Role of Insurance Industry in the Global Economy. Other timely topics such as Guangdong -Hong Kong- Macao Greater Bay Area, green finance and impact investment also featured in various thematic workshops.

2. Innovation and Technology Financial innovation would be an enhanced component this year with a dedicated Panel Discussion on Financial Innovation on Day 1. A series of InnoTalks also covered topics such as fintech, blockchain, payment technology and artificial intelligence.

3. AFF Deal Flow Matchmaking Session During the AFF Deal Flow Matchmaking Session, one-on-one meetings were arranged between sources of funds and sources of deals. Over the years, 3,800+ meetings were arranged for more than 1,800 companies involving investment project owners, private equity firms, investors, high net-worth individuals and senior professionals from intermediaries and professional services providers.

HKTDC 3rd DesignInspire

3rd DesignInspire was held on 5-7 December 2019. Aimed at promoting Hong Kong as the Asia's leading creative hub, DesignInspire featured over 320 global designers and 630 design exhibits in the last edition. Together with a series of seminars, workshops and networking activities, the Expo has attracted over 35,200 visits from Hong Kong and overseas.

This year's DesignInspire was once again provide the design-led inspirations and interactive business solutions from all around the world. The Partner Country is the United Kingdom, which was showcase GREAT British design in work, live, play and learn. Besides, the thematic pavilion - ?助rbanovation?? will illustrate how innovative design and technology can transform our daily life and business operation. Other exhibit features include Hong Kong Creative Force, Academy, Award, Brands, Design without Boundaries, Innovate and Supply, and Shop.

Held concurrently with the Business of Design Week 2019, an annual international event on design, innovation and brands, and other events including Business of IP Asia Forum, Hong Kong International Franchising Show, SmartBiz Expo and Asian E-tailing Summit, the three days of visit was bring the participants an all-rounded rewarding experience.

Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area International Forum

With the promulgation of the Outline Development Plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, as a new attempt to break new ground in pursuing opening up on all fronts in a new era, as a vibrant market with 70 million population, an industrial base of global importance, an international financial and trade center, and the only world-class bay area with two social systems and three customs areas, faces unprecedented development opportunities and receives extensive attention and strong interest from the world.

To better explore how the Greater Bay Area profoundly influences China's development, how it advances the development of Hong Kong and the cause of "One Country, Two Systems", what business and cooperation opportunities it brings to the world, and what insights it may contribute to globalization and global governance, the Hong Kong SAR Government and the Office of the Commissioner of China's Foreign Ministry in the Hong Kong SAR would co-host an international forum, under the theme of "Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area: New Frontier of China's Reform and Opening-up, New Endeavor under 'One Country, Two Systems', and New Platform for Win-Win Cooperation". The forum invited political and business leaders, dignitaries, experts, scholars from Hong Kong and Macao SAR, the Mainland and the world and officials from relevant central government departments to share their views about the future of the Greater Bay Area and international openness and cooperation.

Hong Kong Trade Development Council

Co-organised by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, the Belt and Road Summit bought together senior government officials, representatives of international institutions, business leaders and industry experts from countries along and beyond the Belt and Road to exchange views on multilateral co-operation and explored new business opportunities arising from the Belt and Road Initiative.

The fourth edition of the Belt and Road Summit was themed "Creating and Realising Opportunities". It was feature more practical topics such as infrastructure financing, risk management, digital silk road and smart city. Apart from keeping you abreast of the latest Belt and Road-related intelligence, you can also establish new contacts by joining our networking and business matching events.

Joint Seminar on Hong Kong Authorized Economic Operator Programme & New Business Opportunities in Thailand

Introduced by the HK Custom & Excise Department, Hong Kong AEO Programme had launched since 2010. Under the Programme, local companies of different sizes which had met pre-determined security standards will be accredited as AEOs, and enjoy appropriate Customs facilitation, making things easier while doing businesses with your foreign partners with no accreditation fee will be charged.

Approved applicants will be able to enjoy benefits such as less custom inspection, prioritized customs clearance, reduced stock loss and other privileges under MRA.

In order to introduce you to this free programme, Office of Thai Trade Commissioner were co-organizied a seminar along with Hong Kong Custom & Excise Department on 23 August 2019 (Fri) from 3:00pm 4:30pm at HKTDC SME Center, Wanchai.

Free Trade Agreement and Investment Agreement between Hong Kong and Australia

Hong Kong and Australia commenced negotiations of a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and an Investment Agreement in May 2017. The negotiations were concluded in November 2018. The two Agreements were signed on 26 March 2019.

The Agreements are comprehensive in scope and the commitments therein are of high quality, encompassing trade in goods, trade in services, investment, government procurement, intellectual property, competition, dispute settlement mechanism and other related areas. They will provide Hong Kong traders and investors with legal certainty and more favourable access to the Australian market, whilst creating more business opportunities and enhancing trade and investment flows between Hong Kong and Australia.

The Economic Times Asian Business Leader's Conclave
